Aging Skin and Menopause

Do you want to improve your skin during your menopausal years?

One way is to eat more fat…healthy fat, that is!

You’ve reached perimenopause or menopause and you’re at a point where you’ve had - or you’re considering - facial injections or cosmetic procedures (absolutely no judgment there).

BUT, what if you could stimulate your body's natural ability to increase collagen production?

I’m Jen DeYoung, I’m an occupational therapist and functional wellness practitioner.

My mission is to help women, especially in their middle years who are combating the symptoms of menopause like bloating, brain fog, insomnia, night sweats, and depression, to regain their vibrant, energetic selves again.

We know that menopause can wreak havoc on your skin and other body parts, and you may not recognize the person looking back at you in the mirror…wrinkles, age spots, sagging skin, thinning skin and hair and even acne breakouts -  they’re all signs of lower estrogen levels in the body.

Estrogen is known to promote the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid which helps keep your skin and overall body nice and hydrated. Here’s some tips for what you can do:

  1. Stay hydrated

  2. When washing your face, avoid harsh soaps, and use warm (not too hot) water and use a moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid or glycerin

  3. Use a mineral-based, broad spectrum sunscreen (primarily zinc oxide)

  4. Eat a diet rich in antioxidants and healthy fats - these include avocados, almonds, olive oil, coconut oil, and fatty fish

Natural hormone therapy is definitely another option to increase your estrogen levels which would in turn support skin health. However, we can also look further upstream, before taking hormone therapies and injections. A possible solution for some women could just be taking steps to clear the pathways in the body that stimulate estrogen production and metabolism.

Often we’re dealing with other imbalances that may not seem related but they actually are, such as poor digestion, inflammation, or difficulty with kidney or liver detoxification.

Getting your systems back in order may be all your need to minimize the outward signs of aging in menopause.
